A former Sioux Falls emergency room doctor accused of sex crimes against children changed his plea this afternoon. He also faces charges of writing false prescriptions.
36-year-old Joshua Payer is charged with paying for sex with a minor -- part of a child sex trafficking ring in Tea. He's also accused of writing a false Oxycontin prescription on Oct. 2 of 2009 and giving that prescription to a Tea man who is also allegedly involved in the sex trafficking.
Now Payer has entered a plea agreement, admitting to those charges. He could face up to a lifetime and 20 years in prison, along with a $1.25 million fine.
By pleading guilty, Payer gives up his right to a grand jury trial and most of his opportunities to appeal the judge's eventual sentencing. There's also the possibility that Payer could be added to the sex offender list.
Until he's sentenced, Payer is allowed to live at home as long as he reports to police twice a day and lives under house arrest. He also had to turn over his passport.
Payer is scheduled to be sentenced in February.
